I am so glad to see your excitement about reaching people in the NWT. I hope that excitement translates into an increased participation from those in our congregation for our trip to share the Gospel with the Lakota Tribes at Wounded Knee.

Maybe I'll return to my own blog as well...now that things have settled down a bit for me.

OK- I read the article and found it biased. The basis of the article rests upon the voracity of Killinger himself. He claims to have spoken with pastors and claims to represent their beliefs about the afterlife, other religions and the deity of Christ. Killinger himself is not Baptist, but comes from Congregational and Presbyterian roots.

That the CBF would have him speak is shameful, no doubt. But to question the whole of the CBF based on a speaker at a conference is probably not a great idea. I'm sure someone could find a bad speaker at some point at a conservative Baptist meeting as well.

Just some thoughts,
Brian

Answer, many have fallen asleep Pastor Terry, and it may cause many to wake up where they don't wish to be. Keep up these post Pastor, Great work for Christ.

David... thanks for stopping by and commenting! For the record, I LOVE the Gaither Vocal Band, they are the only Southern Gospel music that I will listen to these days! I was not trying to be too harsh on them personally or their ministry, which brings encouragement to thousands of saints every year.

I get the song too... I understand its message. My point was (and is) that of all their great songs, this one is one of their more "theologically light" songs (even kind of silly in my estimation) and was simply ill-chosen (from MY perspective only) for the SBC at that time.

Please read nothing more into my comment... I don't wish to get on Guy's bad side!

"Jesus And John Wayne" is a great song, written from a realistic, slice-of-life point of view that connects with common, ordinary people.

A person operating under the delusion that people can achieve perfection here on earth might have a theological problem with the lyrics. I don't think that sort of theology is endorsed by most Southern Baptists, though. I've never heard it preached at the churches I've attended, fortunately.

This blogger seems to get it:

This is a very good Convention summary. I was greatly encouraged as I read your opening paragraphs, especially the part about talking with your wife about spiritual matters. Thanks for modeling for us all the way we ought to respond to the SBC, or any other Christian gathering, for that matter.

In Christ,
NAF
