I am a lifelong Kentuckian, born, raised and presently ministering in the Bluegrass State.
I have been married to the same wonderful woman since 1996. Currently, we have 4 children (12,9,5,2, pictured on left loading Operation Christmas Child boxes!) whom we homeschool and adore. We have a pet dog Bo, a fish named Smudge and a pet turtle (Raphael).
I am a Southern Baptist pastor. I know with certainty that God called me to gospel ministry shortly after I was saved at 18. I began my journey in a legalistic “independent” Baptist setting and still have many roots there. I however, have found my home among Conservative, Calvinistic, Reformed-minded Southern Baptists who are not parochial or overly narrow in their assessment of others. While I deplore liberalism, I have no more optimism about cooperating with controlling fundamentalist conservatives than I do milquetoast liberals. My “heroes” in ministry include men like Luther, Calvin, the Church Fathers, John MacArthur, R.C. Sproul, John Piper, John Frame, David Brainerd, Augustine, Spurgeon, Andrew Fuller, J.P. Boyce, C.S. Lewis, Bunyan, Jim Elliott, etc…
I have my MDiv from SBTS in Louisville, and am presently working on a PhD in Evangelism. I have pastored for over 10 years and have served in suburban, inner-city and rural settings. Currently, I pastor the Southern Heights Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky, a medium-sized church just outside of downtown Lexington with a vision for discipling the people of our city. I long to see church life reformed so that the church looks more like the committed, called-out, holy people of God that we see in the book of Acts.
Apart from preaching, teaching, studying, shepherding a church and leading my family, I also have some hobbies that I enjoy. I love to fish and occasionally enjoy hunting. I love all kinds of fishing…Bass, Bluegill, Striper, Crappie, and most recently Muskie to name a few. I also enjoy reading, playing chess and watching lots of home improvement/ decorating shows, although I doubt that I will ever take on such tasks! I enjoy working out regularly at the local YMCA where we belong and I hope to run some 5ks in 2011!
I also love all kinds of music and movies.
My favorite movie: tied between Dumb and Dumber, Fargo, Kingpin (Farrelly Brothers) and The Outlaw Josie Wales
I like bluegrass & bluegrass gospel music & also some of the older ‘Southern Gospel’ stuff I listened to as a child. I sing some….
I already knew you loved those things…are you still playing bluegrass? If so, when and where? Living here in Grayson, we are surrounded by bluegrass festivals and the like all spring and summer. You should come and visit sometime and hear some good music. If so, you will have to visit with us.
hello brother
The article on the governor’s scandal was good. I’m sure that many that read it said it could never happen to them. They need to think about spiritual warfare and how Satan works in this world. By God’s grace we can overcome temptation.
My wife and I came to the NE part of Romania several years ago as southern baptists following the Lord on faith. we gave up much but reached much more. to be where the Lord leads is the best of all worlds. we have started a small bible training center and work mainly with very poor uneducated gyspy people. if you ever do or your church does short term mission trips please feel free about coming and being apart of what God is doing here.
thanks for working in the kingdom. david maynard
Hey, Terry,
I was just looking over your blog. Nobody can read that many books!!! Oh, and I find it interesting that “The Outlaw Josie Wales” is one of your favorites. Our Pastor at Hope Springs said that was his favorite movie. Maybe I need to watch it, but it doesn’t sound like a chic flick!
You might have an interest in my new book, PIECES. It consists of 12 sermons on “The Prodigal Son,” which may be the greatest story ever told. It is also about the scattered pieces of our lives and Jesus, the only one who can find all the pieces. Amazon is one of many places it is available.
Joy,
